In the tradition of the flâneur, Brazilian artist Gustavo Ciriaco and Austrian artist Andrea Sonnberger carefully guide you on an hour-long, silent walk through the streets of Red Hook. Literally bound to the group by a supersized rubber band, you become part of an instant community, a collective spectacle, an ephemeral space. Together, New York’s quietest glimmers of beauty are yours to discover.

This project was originally created within the frame of Close Encounters, an initiative of Alkantara (Lisboa) and Panorama (Rio) festivals.

About Gustavo Ciriaco

Gustavo Ciriaco (b. 1969, Brazil) is a performing artist based in Lisbon and in Rio. He started his career in Political Sciences and then drifted to dance-making. In his projects, Ciriaco creates dialogues between the historical, material, and affective contexts of public spaces. His pieces often involve participation from spectators, with an aim to create the present and presence collaboratively. He has presented work in major international festivals, galleries and venues including Paris Quartier d’Été, Tanz im August Berlin, Taipei Digital Art Centre and Tokyo Wonder Site. He was the artistic director of Manifesta! (Rio) and guest curator for the festival ENTRE Lugares (Rio | London) with Chelsea Theatre. In 2012, he was part of Rio Occupation London, the Brazilian Artistic Mission under London Cultural Olympiad with the project Where the horizon moves at V22, in partnership with Battersea Arts Centre. He has recently been working with Fernanda Eugénio on the project Steaming Cities in New York, hosted by the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics/New York University (April 2015).

About Andrea Sonnberger

Andrea Sonnberger (b. Austria) was educated as a dancer in Vienna and Munich, and was engaged as a performer in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and Lithuania. Since 1996 she has been working on her own choreographies and ideas, which have also led to installation works and collaborations with other artists. In 1999 she was winner of the Prix du Festival Cour des Capucins in Luxembourg. In 2003 she got a scholarship from Munich and founded the community umluft with Eva Forler and Helmut Ott. Since 2003 she has been studying Tai Chi Dao Yin. In 2005/06 she was invited together with the Brazilian choreographer Gustavo Ciríaco to the project Close Encounters in Lisbon, where they developed the outdoors performance Here whilst we walk. Together they developed another project called neighbors, presented in Lisbon, Madrid and Jerusalem. She currently lives and works in Austria mainly as a shiatsu practitioner and a Tai Chi Dao Yin teacher.
