Joris Lacoste
Suite n°2

US Premiere
Thu, Sep 10 & Fri, Sep 11 at 7:30pm

FIAF, Florence Gould Hall

In Suite n°2, an uproarious and poignant performance emerges from the simplest of sources—the spoken word.

A group of five performers overlays and intertwines entries from French director Joris Lacoste's Encyclopédie de la parole—a vast online archive of voice recordings— in a virtuosic performance that decontextualizes speech into iconic mementos of civilization.

Spanning the banal, the political, the intimate, and the public, this playful and compelling performance amplifies every hesitation, intonation, and utterance of human expression beyond words.

About Joris Lacoste

Joris Lacoste (b. 1973, France) is a Paris-based artist, director and performance-maker. Borrowing from literature, theater, visual arts, music, and sound poetry, his work is informed and created through a deep commitment to research. He has been writing for theater and radio since 1996 and has been creating his own performances since 2003. From 2007 to 2009, he was co-director of Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers. He initiated L’Encyclopédie de la parole as a collaborative project in 2007; the project served as source material for Parlement, a solo performance starring Emmanuelle Lafon in 2009, and later, Suite n°1. In New York he presented L'Encyclopédie de la parole at Performa 11. He was also an artist in residence at FIAF in 2012, presenting 4 Prepared Dreams at Crossing the Line that year.

About L’Encyclopédie de la Parole

L'Encyclopédie de la parole is an artistic project exploring the spoken word in all its forms. Since 2007, a diverse group of musicians, poets, directors, visual artists, actors, sociolinguists, and curators, have been collecting and indexing recordings on encyclopediedelaparole.org. The collection now numbers more than 800 sound documents spanning shamanic incantations to The Young and the Restless dubbed into French. An art collective comprising Frédéric Danos, Emmanuelle Lafon, Nicolas Rollet, Joris Lacoste, David Christoffel, Valérie Louys, and Elise Simonet use the archive as source material to create performances, lectures, games, and exhibitions.
