Hip-hop,
pop ‘n’ lock, mime, and acrobatics mingle with French, North
African, and Andalusian influences in this tribute to the
creative possibilities of society’s abandoned spaces. Choreographed
by urban dance wunderkind Mourad Merzouki and featuring his
hot-blooded Compagnie Käfig, Wasteland takes its cue
from the circus as a place of communal spirit and freewheeling
creation, where official identities fade into new forms of
expression. Around a forlorn lamppost near a housing project,
dancers dance as if no one is watching and
“give off so much heat that the audience can’t resist” (Le
Monde). |
