A Woman’s Obsession comes
to the FIAF Gallery after successful exhibitions in both
Tokyo and Paris, where it was a selection of the Mois de
la Photo.
During a visit to Japan in 2005, French photographer and
artist Chantal Stoman became fascinated by the shopping and
purchasing customs of Japanese women. Over the following
year, she returned to Tokyo several times to document the
meticulous rituals observed in the pursuit and consumption
of European, particularly French, luxury brands.
Seeking to explore the obsession with consuming the products
and image of a society half a world away, Stoman acts as
a witness, observing this trans-global dialogue without judgment.
These photographs contemplate a complex cultural phenomenon
with insight, humor, beauty, and wit.
