Crossing the Line: FIAF Fall Festival 2008 Public Discussion
Why Do Politicians Need Artists?

Saturday, September 20, 2008
4–6pm

Part of Crossing the Line: FIAF Festival 2008

Moderator: André Lepecki
Panelists: Ralph Lemon, Julia Mandle, and Arthur Nauzyciel

Americans, and the world, will remember 2008 for its historic presidential election. As the campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain move into full gear, little is said about the candidates’ positions on the arts, or their views on the role of artists in contemporary society.

This panel brings together independent artists from France and New York whose work engages with social and political issues. They will examine what role artists already play in relation to building a healthier society, and what value and function Americans place on a vibrant artistic community.

Join FIAF for this pertinent and timely round-table discussion on the role of the artist in society including an opportunity for audience members’ questions and observations.

Ralph Lemon, Independent Artist (New York)
Lemon formed Cross Performance/ Ralph Lemon Company in 1985, which performed worldwide as a touring dance ensemble, receiving numerous residencies, commissions, and grants. Other projects include The Walter Project, a series of works in various art form developed in collaboration with Walter Carter and The Geography Trilogy, a decade-long international research and performance project that included three evening-length dance/theater performances. In 2006, Lemon received an inaugural United States Artists Fellowship.

André Lepecki, Associate Professor of Performance Studies (NYU)
A curator, dramaturg, writer, and co-creator, based in New York, Lepecki is an Associate Professor in Performance Studies at New York University. He has worked with Eleonora Fabião, João Fiadeiro, Vera Mantero, Bruce Mau, Meg Stuart, and Rachael Swain. Since 2008, he has held a position as a Permanent Fellow at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. His current research focuses on the relationships between dance, philosophy, and sculpture.

Julia Mandle, Independent Artist (New York)
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Williams College, Mandle went on to receive numerous awards for her performance art, including a NYFA Fellowship in Performance Art. Her earliest grant came from the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art, while other awards have included The Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art, New York State Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She will spend February 2009 at the Interdisciplinary Residency in Art and Ecology at the Guapamacataro Hacienda in central Mexico.

Arthur Nauzyciel, Artistic Director of National Dramatic Center of Orléans (France)
Born in Paris in 1967, Mr. Nauzyciel studied painting, sculpture, and film at the Théâtre National de Chaillot, under Antoine Vitez.  An associate artist at the CDDB-Théâtre de Lorient from 1996 to 2006, he founded his own company, Compagnie 41751, in 1999.
