This
new work, commissioned in part by FIAF, re-invents Varda’s
classic New Wave film, Cleo From 5 to 7, as theater.
Shot in 1961 in Paris, the film captures the early evening
hours in the life of a marginally-talented pop singer as
she waits to hear if she has terminal cancer. The ensemble
uses the film’s script as a found object, moving three rolling
walls and low-budget video to contrast the agility of film
with the endearingly burdensome nature of theater. In this
collaboration, costumes, set, and wallpaper merge through
video into one medium bringing the cinematic world’s vivid,
colorful interiors to life.
