This
fall, FIAF’s Art de Vivre series The Art of
Eating Today, invites you to discover how trends
in food—the way we eat it, cook it, and its role in our health—change
over time and how they influence the way we live.
The rise of modern restaurants in the 19th century— establishments
dedicated entirely to the acts of serving and enjoying food
outside the home—transformed the way people eat and cook
in the private and public spheres. The advent of the restaurant
diminished the importance of home cooking, gave the act of
eating a meal a new social dimension beyond the family, and
elevated cooking to an art.
To
discuss this revolution in consumption, FIAF welcomes Anka
Muhlstein, prize-winning author of biographical and historical
works, and Michael Batterberry, editor-in-chief of Food
Arts magazine and author of On the Town in New York.
Together, they will present the intriguing history of restaurants
in Paris and New York, engaging in a cross-cultural conversation
about their birth and development, moderated by food and
wine journalist David Lincoln Ross.
