FIAF
is pleased to extend the successful Great Masters of Lithography exhibition,
featuring a collection of original
color lithographs of works by great modern artists including
Calder, Chagall, Dufy, Léger, Matisse, Miró,
and Picasso.
In January 2010, the Gallery added vintage posters by three
new artists, Kandinsky, Toulouse-Lautrec, and de Vlaminck
to the collection, as well as exciting new works by Chagall,
Cocteau, Leger, Matisse and Picasso.
In the early twentieth century, celebrated artists including
Calder, Chagall, Dufy, Léger, Matisse, Miró, and Picasso,
rediscovered the technique of lithography thanks to the Atelier
Mourlot, a Parisian printshop founded in 1852 by the Mourlot
family. Originally specializing in printing wallpaper, the
printshop became a lithographic workshop under the leadership
of the founder’s grandson, Fernand. He invited leading artists
to learn the complexities of lithography, the first fundamentally
new printing technology since the invention of relief printing
in the fifteenth century.
Lithography revolutionized the printing world by enabling
artists to work with traditional materials using classic
techniques to create prints that rivaled the quality of an
original painting. In the Atelier Mourlot, elite twentieth-century
artists drew directly on specially prepared lithographic
stones to create artworks that were then produced under the
direction of master printers. The combined genius of modern
artist and master printer gave rise to unique and visually
striking lithographs that appeared only as limited editions.
The exhibit is presented in partnership with the prestigious Galerie
Mourlot New York, which was founded in 2006 by Fernand
Mourlot’s grandson, Eric Mourlot.
