Le Vieil Homme et L’Enfant
Claude Berri, 1967. B & W. 86 min.
With Michel Simon and Alain Cohen
Based on director Claude Berri’s own
experiences in France during the occupation, The Two of Us tells the poignant story of an 8-year-old boy whose parents force him to hide his Jewish identity and send him from Paris to the countryside for safety. There, he lives with a lovable though conservative Catholic couple. Despite their religious differences, the boy builds a strong, affectionate bond with the couple, especially with the old Pépé who becomes his friend and confidant.
