This fall, Opéra Français de New York returns to FIAF following its critically acclaimed presentation of Debussy‘s Pelleas et Melisande at Florence Gould Hall in 2005, a production that Anthony Tommassini of The New York Times called “a revelation”. In collaboration with FIAF, OFNY presents a multidisciplinary event based on an unfinished commission to Claude Debussy from the Metropolitan Opera. In 1908, the Met asked Debussy to score an opera based on stories by Edgar Allen Poe, the American poet and writer best known for his mysterious and macabre tales. Debussy selected Fall of the House of Usher and The Devil in the Belfry, and worked for several years on the orchestration of this operatic double-bill, but died before he could complete it.

In conjunction with the bicentennial of Poe’s birth, OFNY presents an operatic journey integrating Debussy’s unfinished score with Poe’s texts (staged as theatrical fragments), inspired by the French composer’s and American writer’s continuous flirtation with the bizarre. This unique program exudes themes common to Poe and Debussy, from their Romantic taste for neurotic characters and vague settings to feelings of instability and danger.
