Location Dislocation: Identity in a Global World |
| Wednesday, May 30 -
Saturday, June 23 |
With their seemingly surreal and
keenly observational photography,
internationally-recognized artists
Andrea Robbins and Max Becher
explore what they have termed the
“transportation of place.” Their work
is represented in many international
museums and private collections.
In this exhibition, the German-born
Becher and American Robbins look
at three instances of dislocation, where
a culture or place has been copied
and relocated: Germans who dress as
Native Americans, a Bavarian town in
Washington State, and American chain
stores in the French countryside.
This latter study, titled “America
in France: Strip Malls of Toulouse,”
documents the surprising and somewhat
incongruous presence of a globalized
and corporatized entity in an otherwise
pastoral setting. The images raise
questions about authenticity, sincerity,
globalization, and cultural exchange. |
