| Music critic and musicologist Henry-Louis de La Grange presents the life and work of Gustav Mahler. A true New York musician, Mahler left his native Vienna to conduct the New York Philharmonic, bringing international recognition to the orchestra.
Professor de La Grange will discuss the English translation of the fourth and final volume of his monumental biography, Gustav Mahler, a New Life Cut Short.
The publication of the first three volumes of Henry-Louis de La Grange’s Mahler biography received unanimous recognition as an international musicological event, each winning numerous awards, including the Prize of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London.

Henry-Louis de La Grange studied harmony, counterpoint, and musical analysis in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. A busy career as a music critic ensued, initially for the French weekly newspaper Arts and later on, as a freelance writer, for various French, English, and American publications. A much travelled lecturer and frequent radio presence, he co-hosted a seminal program, broadcast in 28 two-hour segments, retracing Mahler’s life for France-Musique. |
