French New Circus

Thursday & Friday, January 10 & 11 at 7pm

Developed during the 1970s, the nouveau cirque style fuses the strictly theatrical elements of the circus with acrobatics and juggling, in order to recount a specific story. Forgoing animals and the spectacle of the traditional circus, nouveau cirque focuses instead on the physical dexterity and unique skills of each performer. Four French companies will present twenty minute vignettes, which highlight the stark originality of their techniques and the variety in their execution.

Intérieur Nuit

Association W/ Jean-Baptiste André

Intérieur Nuit

Created and performed by Jean-Baptiste André

A lonely man wanders in an enclosed wasteland, with no exit. Suddenly, his imagination takes hold and begins to counter his shaky reality. Using elements of traditional circus performance with dance, music, theatre, and video—the performance forgoes any physical setting, altering even the audience’s perception of reality.

Jeanne Mordoj

Compagnie Bal

Eloge du poil

Created and performed by Jeanne Mordoj
Directed by Pierre Meunier

Jeanne Mordoj appropriates a male attribute, a beard, for her female body, creating a mysterious femininity. Incorporating other unusual objects, Mordoj creates an uneasy atmosphere, highlighting the repulsive and attractive features that even the bizarre possess.
