From coq au vin to crème brulée,
the French know great food. This fall
FIAF presents a film series that not
only shows the range of French cuisine
but also celebrates the importance
of food and wine in French culture.
Renowned food and travel columnist
for Esquire Magazine and series
co-curator, John Mariani, comes to
FIAF on October 2, 9, 23, and 30 to introduce
the films and discuss them with
specials guests from the New York
culinary world.

The Battle of the Century
Directed by Clyde Bruckman, 1927.
B&W. 11 min. Silent
With Laurel as a hapless prize fighter and Hardy as his naïve manager, it’s no surprise that the two fare poorly in the boxing ring. During an attempt to fake an accident in order to secure some insurance money, the two end up instigating what is surely the greatest pie fight in film history.
Marie Antoinette
Directed by Sofia Coppola, 2006. Color. 123 min.
With Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman,
Judy Davis, Rip Torn.
In English
Coppola’s take on the notorious queen could never be accused of being a traditional biopic. With a soundtrack leaning toward ’80 post-punk, the film is less interested in being faithful to history and more concerned with creating mood and gorging itself on opulence, décor, and macarons. Deeply connected with Coppola’s other films about captive teenage girls, Marie Antoinette is unexpectedly personal and an absolute success.

Piccoli, Philippe Noiret,
Ugo Tognazzi
In
French with English

Released to much controversy and acclaim, this nihilistic and darkly comic account of four men who convene to eat themselves to death still has the power to provoke. As the purpose behind their pact remains obscured, the gluttony on display-seen in how they consume both food and prostitutes-becomes all the more transfixing.
