Homage to Yves Montand
June 3,10, 17 & 24, 2008
July 1, 8, 15 & 22, 2008 |
 |
Though born in Italy, Yves Montand
will forever be a French icon—in fact, The New York Times memorialized him
as “the quintessential French romantic,
half-adventurer, half-intellectual.”
A true master of the arts, he began
his career as a singer, epitomizing
Paris in dancehall songs with Édith Piaf.
As an actor, he worked with the greatest
directors of his age: Henri-Georges
Clouzot, Costa-Gavras, and Alain Corneau.
FIAF celebrates the career and life
of Montand through a selection of works
that show his diversity as an actor
and his continuing appeal as a movie star
for more than forty years. |

of the Long Distance Singer
La solitude du chanteur de fond

June 10
at 12:30, 4 & 7:30pm
Chris Marker, 1974. Color. 74 min.
Yves Montand, Chris Marker
In French with English subtitles
As a filmmaker, Chris Marker has always
been very much a diarist, crafting intimate
portraits of his subjects. The same is true
with this, his affectionate look at Montand,
which includes conversations with
costars, his wife Simone Signoret, and
Montand himself. Essential viewing
for fans of both Marker and Montand,
the film teems with insight into the life
of this great French artist.

Louis de Funès &
Yves Montand |
Delusions of Grandeur
La folie des grandeurs
Tuesday,
June 24
at 12:30, 4 & 7:30pm
Gérard Oury, 1971. Color. 108 min.
With Yves Montand, Louis de Funès
In French with English subtitles
This costume comedy set in Renaissance
Spain abounds with delightful treasures,
including the two leads. De Funès
is a wonder to watch as Don Salluste,
the scorned tax collector to the King,
and Montand is a risky, brilliant choice
for Blaze, his valet. With revenge and
royal outrage fueling its inspired
absurdity, the film is a clear predecessor
to farces such as The Visitors.

A chance conversation between strangers
Michel (Montand) and Lydia (Schneider)

he is recently widowed and she has
lost her daughter. Finding comfort and
compassion in each other, they struggle
to build a relationship together, still
haunted by their respective losses.
The last film that Montand and Schneider
made together, it proved a late career
triumph for both.

The first of Claude Berri’s internationally
acclaimed adaptations of Marcel Pagnol's

meditation on greed and the cruelty borne

property with a bounteous spring.
When the new owner refuses to sell
the land, the duo are forced to take more
extreme measures.
