Iconic French actress Bernadette Lafont
has dazzled audiences throughout
her five-decade-long career. Named
“the new face of the New Wave”
by Les Cahiers du cinéma and hailed
by the New York Times as “one of France’s
most original actresses,” Lafont comes
to FIAF to present a selection of her
work, including her films with legendary
directors François Truffaut, Jean Eustache,
and Claude Chabrol.
Claude Chabrol, 1960
B&W. 100 min.
With Bernadette Lafont,
Stéphane Audran.
In Italian and French
with English subtitles
Chabrol’s third film is one
of the most important early
works of the nouvelle vague.
The seemingly loose structure
ultimately reveals great insight
and compassion for the four
shopgirls at its core, whose
romantic and professional
adventures are chronicled.
Jean Eustache, 1973
B&W. 217 min.
With Bernadette Lafont,
Jean-Pierre Léaud
In French with English subtitles
Disengaged from politics,
family, and society, three
youths seduce and destroy
each other in the summer of
1972 as France still recovers
from the events of 1968.
Lafont is magnetic in her
balance of narcissism and
desperation in Eustache’s epic
vision of sour relationships.
A Very Curious Girl La fiancée du pirate Tuesday, April 10, 2012
12:30, 4 & 7:30pm
FIAF, Florence Gould Hall
Free for FIAF Members
Nelly Kaplan, 1969
Color. 107 min.
With Bernadette Lafont,
Georges Géret,
Claire Maurier,
Henry Czarniak
In French with English subtitles
Lafont is front and center
here as a young woman
in a small town who takes
up prostitution. Turning tricks
ends up providing her with
a kind of currency, as the
men who are allegedly
outraged by her behavior
are also sometimes her
clients. A bitterly funny (and
progressive) revenge parable.

The Mischief Makers
Les mistons François Truffaut, 1957
B&W. 23 min.
In French with English subtitles
Truffaut’s second short and
Lafont’s film debut captures
two intertwined views of
youth. The intimacy of two
teens is threatened by five
boys who, with no girlfriends
of their own, jealously conspire
to make trouble for the couple
and everyone else they meet.
Such a Gorgeous
Girl
Like Me
Une belle fille comme moi François Truffaut, 1972
Color. 98 min.
With Claude Brasseur,
Charles Denner,
Guy Marchand,
Bernadette Lafont
In French with English subtitles
A young sociologist’s
interview with killer Camille
Bliss is the unlikely foundation
for one of Truffaut’s most
successful comedies.
Conceived as a tribute to
Lafont, Such a Gorgeous Girl
Like Me uses flashbacks and
farce to chronicle the men
who have fallen under her
spell and paid dearly for it.
