Meet the Artists

An Evening with Philippe Decouflé

Sunday, March 4 at 7pm
French choreographer and director Philippe Decouflé presents a montage of short films, including his own works, as well as works from other artists who have influenced him. This montage (click to see list of works) was conceived by Philippe Decouflé and his team to celebrate the inauguration of the Dance Cinematheque as an independent organization (Cinémathèque de la Danse) in October 2005.

Decouflé gained worldwide attention for the opening ceremonies he staged for the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville. His work is strongly influenced by the circus and the teachings of American choreographer Alwin Nikolais, but also by costumes and objects that put a new twist on the human body and its mobility. The choreographer’s creativity highlights the relationship between machines and living things.

The screening will be followed by a conversation/Q&A with Philippe Decouflé and Patrick Bensard, director of Cinémathèque de la Danse.
