Eligibility
101 classes are reserved for students who have never studied French.
Students with prior French must take FIAF's
free placement test.

Objectives: 101 Beginner

Speak French from day one! Learn everyday expressions and phrases, ask and answer basic questions, and have simple conversations. Authentic situational exercises introduce you to the structure and use of language in everyday life.

  • Get in touch with someone
  • Excuse yourself
  • Introduce yourself and someone else
  • Ask someone to introduce himself/herself
  • Express your tastes
  • Discuss your plans

Linguistic Skills (grammar and vocabulary)

  • Use of tu or vous
  • Days of the week
  • The alphabet and a few acronyms
  • Polite expressions
  • Use of personal pronouns je, tu, vous, il, elle
  • Etre (to be)
  • Masculine/feminine
  • Numbers
  • The negative form: ne...pas
  • Possessive adjectives
  • Syntax
  • Use of c'est and il est (it is and he is)
  • Tones and intonation of interrogative sentences
  • Professions and nationalities
  • Oui, non, si (yes, and no)
  • Aller (to go)
  • Moi aussi (me too)
  • On, Nous, ils, elles (we, they)
  • Complete conjugation of verbs ending in -er, être and avoir (to be and to have)
