Dive deeper into French culture with themes that change each session.

Culture shapes the way language is structured and the ways in which language is used. Expand your linguistic skills while exploring themes as diverse as pop culture, history, society, politics, philosophy, everyday life, and more. Using a variety of media—novels, films, documentaries, news articles, and more—you will have the opportunity to delve deeper into each topic. This course is designed for the culture addict who would like to learn more about French and other Francophone cultures, as well as become more independent in speaking in French about more complex and challenging topics. Themes will vary from session to session.

From New York to Paris through Art

In this course, you will have the opportunity to discover great artists and fascinating life and art in cafés, theaters, studios and galleries of Paris during 20th century. You will discover non only artworks from Man Ray, Alexander Calder, Kiki de Montparnasse, Hemingway, Josephine Baker, and Marcel Duchamp but also their life style, their friendships and love stories. This class will be composed of video projections, discussions, grammar exercises and field trips. You will expand your linguistic skills as well as become more independent in speaking in French about more artistic topics and fun anecdotes. This course is for you if you are curious about not only art history but also French way of life, if you want to improve your communication skills (not only reading, listening but also writing and speaking) through playful exercises. By the end of this course, you will be able to understand short texts and videos, to tell about your feelings, your experiences and to produce a simple and well organized speech. You will also be able to write short articles about artworks you analyzed in class and /or museums and galleries.

 

French through Graphic Novels

In this course, we will discover Francophone classic and contemporary novels and stories through cartoons and graphic novels such as La gloire de mon père (Tanco +Stoffel + Scotto), Les Culottées (Pénélope Bagieux) or La Légèreté (Catherine Meurisse). You will travel through different periods and areas (Marseille, Paris, Rome, New York) while living some fascinating artists, writers and heroes’lives. These books pay homage beauty, catharsis and epicurism. This course is for you if you want to improve your French in a fun and creative way. Pictures will help you to understand better the language, to discuss about your feelings and to feel more confident. By the end of this class, you will know more about French literature while discovering different aspects of French life. You will be able to analyze some texts, pictures and films.
