What is the TEF for Québec (TEFaQ)?

The TEFaQ is a specific version of the Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) which has been elaborated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris Ile-de-France (CCI Paris Ile-de-France) based on the request of the Ministry of Immigration and Cultural Communities of Québec (MICC) to assess French language competency in those wishing to emigrate to Québec.

The TEFaQ is composed of a listening comprehension module and an oral expression module. You must take both to complete your test.

• Listening Comprehension (60 items – 40 minutes)
• Oral Expression (35 minutes)

As of 2013, principal candidates have a choice of taking either the TEFaQ or the complete TEF, which includes modules on reading comprehension and written expression in addition to those on listening comprehension and oral expression, to fulfill MICC requirements. The TEF reading and writing modules are optional in this context and if not completed will not affect the rest of the TEF score. If both oral and written sets of modules are completed, separate attestations will be delivered for each.

Candidate spouses must take the TEFaQ.

All candidates must achieve a minimum overall evaluated level of B2.

How is TEFaQ graded?

As for the TEF, the TEFaQ scores are ranked on 6 levels, ranging from 0+ level (basic skills) to level 6 (master skills) as per the scale of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris Ile-de-France (CCI Paris Ile-de-France) and from A1 level to C2 level, as defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of References for Languages). TEF and TEFaQ score results are reliable measurements of language proficiency. An official certificate which is valid for one year is awarded.
