Explore important moments in French history as documented by world-renowned writers. Learn about politics, religion, social and cultural events, and the lives of notable individuals.

Immense fresque épique,c'est la Convention de 1793 et c'est aussi l'histoire de trois hommes en Vendée : Lantenac , l'homme du roi et de tout l'honneur de l'ancienne France , Cimourdain , le génie austère et mplacable de la révolution et entre eux , Gauvain , neveu de Lantenac et fils spirituel de Cimourdain, un aristocrate passé au peuple . C'est aussi le dernier roman de Victor Hugo qui rentre de l'exil après la chute de l'Empire pour assister au spectacle d'une France déchirée par la guerre civile et envahie par les Prussiens.
