TR350 (Level B2)
TR450 (Level C1)

This course provides provides students with basic translation techniques from English into French through texts, articles, literary works, film reviews, scientific and technical texts.  While working directly with texts, this course will develop the complete range of linguistic skills (oral and written comprehension, oral and written expression). Students gain linguistic proficiency while mastering modern written and oral French and while comparing the manner in which people of both cultures express themselves.

In this course you will:

  • Widen your vocabulary
  • Fine-tune your knowledge of grammar points
  • Grasp subtleties of the French language
  • Identify deceptive cognates (“false friends”) and traps
  • Become aware of the difficulties of transposing thought from one language to another
  • Perfect both your written comprehension and expression skills
  • Develop the sense of flexibility and tolerance in linguistic expression necessary for translation work
  • Understand how nothing in the translation process should be taken for granted
  • Call into question and challenge your knowledge of your own native language
  • Look at alll texts with different eyes and sensibilities
  • Consolidate the skills which will enable you to undertake translations on a professional level
