Public Relations (PR) Intern

We are looking for a highly motivated Public Relations (PR) Intern with loads of personality and a solid interest in learning about the industry and creating key working contacts. The right candidate will help execute the department’s media strategy for the organization’s diverse programs, including: performing arts, film, visual arts, food and wine events, fashion, book events, etc. The intern will become familiarized with the New York media landscape while helping to secure coverage of FIAF’s broad range of cultural programming. He/she will be the right hand to the PR Director and support FIAF’s mission of increasing knowledge of the French language and interaction among French, Francophone and American cultures.

What to expect:
On-the-job experience in the Marketing & Communications department and great exposure to the best of contemporary French culture in New York.


  • Conduct daily media monitoring and organize/produce press books
  • Manage all event listings and help with pitching
  • Research new media outlets and update press lists
  • Collaborate on press releases for programs and events
  • Support the PR Director on-site at FIAF events
  • General administrative/marketing duties

Education/Skills Required:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree or higher
  • Motivation to work in the PR industry
  • Strong writing skills – must be native English speaker
  • Strong attention to detail, well organized and able to multi-task
  • Strong interest in the arts and desire to work in a Francophile/multi-cultural environment

Intern will receive a stipend based on time commitment.
French classes and membership are also offered.

We are looking for someone to assist in the PR Department full-time or part-time starting immediately in early August, with a minimum commitment of 24 hours per week for six months.

Interactive Media Designer (Internship / Part Time)

FIAF is seeking an Interactive Media Designer to create Adobe Flash e-learning content for online French language courses. Pedagogical direction will be provided by FIAF Language Center staff, who will create storyboards to guide the designer. This will be a collaborative effort, with Language Center staff and the designer working together to create the final product.


  • Experience creating Adobe Flash based interactive media.
  • Proficiency using Adobe creative suite products, most importantly Flash Professional and Photoshop.
  • Past experience using e-learning content creation software a plus. (Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline)
  • Past experience creating e-learning/online training content a plus.

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to French language and culture, is seeking a graphic designer.

FIAF’s graphic design team creates materials to support the organization’s marketing, communications, and development campaigns. These materials include, but are not limited to, event calendars, brochures, newsletters, postcards, flyers, posters, invitations, print and online advertisements, journals, annual reports, and signage.

In this position, you will work with FIAF’s on-site, full-time graphic designer as well as a Paris-based artistic director (on certain projects), in order to develop strong creative concepts that engage, attract, promote, and sell FIAF’s cultural and educational programs, special events, and library. The designer will learn, work within, and help to grow/evolve FIAF’s established style guidelines and strong visual identity.

Responsibilities & Duties (include but are not limited to):

  • Confer with FIAF’s President, VP of Marketing & Communications, Marketing Coordinator, and all other relevant FIAF departments in order to determine creative concept, layout, and design of all FIAF materials.
  • Use a range of media including photography, illustration, and computer-aided design.
  • Work closely with VP of Marketing and departmental interns on the routing of materials and the overall production schedule.
  • Solicit and compile printing quotes/estimates, and manage relationships with printers and other external vendors.
  • Review final layouts and proofs, and coordinate edits/improvements.
  • Go on press for certain high-priority projects. Experience with commercial printing and the printing process a must.
  • Deftly manage multiple projects and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Collaborate with IT department on software and hardware needs and issues, as well as FIAF’s website, e-newsletters, and all digital media.
  • Art direct photo shoots when needed for promotional material.
  • Organize and manage in-house photographs and archival materials, and coordinate with external organizations to solicit photographic images, as needed.
  • Keep abreast of developments in design software, tools, formats, and trends.


  • BFA in graphic design or related field, as well as demonstrable skills and talent in graphic design.
  • Strong capacity to work in a team environment and to synthesize input from different sources.
  • Must be able to adjust to multiple and shifting priorities, be meticulous, thorough and detailed; be able to meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
  • Must be experienced in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. HTML/Flash/motion knowledge a plus.
  • Strong sensitivity to typography, color building/relationships, and offset printing.
  • Good photography skills, including understanding of digital photography and retouching a plus.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrates ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments and external partners.
  • Positive attitude and outstanding work ethic.
  • Sense of humor.
  • Excellent knowledge and appreciation of French language and culture.

Social Media Intern

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) seeks a talented, creative, and experienced candidate for part time Social Media Intern. The Social Media Intern reports to the VP of Marketing & Communications and is responsible for content generation for all of FIAF’s social media accounts, analytics and reporting for social campaigns, and leveraging both existing and new social media tools to further institutional goals and objectives.

The ideal candidate has a fluency in top social media platforms is already actively participating in a wide variety of social media activities such as blogging, community development and management, social bookmarking, commenting, etc. and is well-connected with the broader social media world. Social media platforms currently in use at FIAF include (but are not limited to): Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Pinterest, Youtube, Vimeo, Yelp.

The position begins as soon as possible and requires at least a 4 month commitment, ideally for 2-3 days a week with some evening event coverage. Transit stipend will be provided.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Create and edit copy and content for all social media platforms (mix of promotional content for FIAF’s programs and original evergreen content)
  • Manage posting/maintenance schedule for all social media
  • Communicate directly with FIAF fans , often in a customer service oriented capacity
  • Coordinate co-promotions with external partners and sponsors
  • Coordinate street teams and volunteers via social networks
  • Work directly with FIAF graphic designer(s) and web master when necessary
  • Produce weekly and monthly analytics for FIAF’s social activities on multiple platforms
  • Monitor trends in social media tools and applications, and appropriately apply that knowledge as it relates to FIAF projects and priorities
  • Ensure all social media activity is aligned with established brand standards and FIAF style guidelines


  • Undergraduate studies in Marketing, Communications, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with social media, social networks, and online communities, including blogging.
  • Must be tech savvy and demonstrate a genuine passion for the world of social media and online communication
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Native English speaker, some knowledge of French preferred

Teaching Artists

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) invites dynamic, experienced, and creative Teaching Artists to apply to our 2015-2016 In-School Arts Education Program. Teaching Artists in all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The Program
FIAF matches Teaching Artists with public middle schools in under-served New York City neighborhoods to lead weekly, sequential arts workshops during regular school hours with classes of 15-25 students (1-3 per school). These workshops introduce students to Francophone cultures and a specific artistic discipline while empowering and inspiring students through the hands-on process of creating their own final projects.

At the end of each workshop, students’ final art projects are displayed in FIAF’s Gallery.

During the 2015-2016 school year, these workshops will span approximately 24 weeks between September 2015 and April 2016. Each class will participate for the full 24-week sequence.


  • Native French speaker with excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Excellent teaching ability, including experience with classroom teaching and curriculum development. Prior experience with adolescents and NYC public schools a plus.
  • Artistic excellence, including quality and scope of artistic work and depth of knowledge within an artistic discipline.
