The FIAF Language Center is the largest language school dedicated to teaching the French language in the tri-state area. With more than 7,000 registrations annually, we offer French in three convenient locations: Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens, and Montclair, NJ.

In conjunction with its adult French language learning program, FIAF offers French language learning programs for toddlers (ages 1-4), kids (5-10) and teens (11-17) from beginner to advanced levels, including French for native-speakers.

Our program offers a high level of language instruction through curricula that are specially designed to meet children's pedagogical needs at every stage of their development. All our classes provide an integrated approach to French language and culture.

The Kids and Teens Programs Coordinator organizes and works under the direction of the Youth Programs Director to coordinate, develop and implement FIAF’s Kids and Teens Programs. FIAF Kids & Teens’ Programs are comprised of:

  • Kids and Teens' Classes (ages 5-17)
  • Workshops
  • Kids and Teens' Summer Day Programs (ages 5-10 and 11-14)
  • Teens' Summer Immersion Classes (ages 11-14 and 15-17)

Main Responsibilities:

  • Pedagogical:
    • Develop and enrich the Kids & Teens class offerings
    • Organize and lead teacher training sessions
    • Evaluate and improve teacher performance through classroom observations and coaching
    • Stay current with the latest methodology, pedagogical resources and technology for the teaching of French as a foreign language to a young audience
    • Stay current with the official French curriculum for teaching French language (official curriculum of the French Ministry of Education)
    • Teach Kids & Teens classes and conduct placement test occasionally
  • Teachers Management/Human Resources:
    • Manage a team of about 10-15 teachers dedicated to the Kids & Teens programs
    • Advise teachers on pedagogy and available pedagogical resources
    • Identify the training needs of the pedagogical team
    • Recruit, train, and assist new instructors
  • Class Schedule Management:
    • Schedule classes at the beginning of each session
    • Assign classes to teachers
    • Oversee enrollment in Kids & Teens programs
    • Assist with the registration process at the start of each session
  • Business Development
    • Communicate program content and updates to parents and answer inquiries
    • Meet with clients to ensure their satisfaction and re-enrollment
    • Seek out prospective clients and ensure enrollment
    • Foster a positive relationship between students, parents and instructors
    • Stay current with the class offerings of our competitors for young French learners as well as with their marketing strategies (web content, etc) in order to establish FIAF as a leader in the field
    • Participate in the elaboration and implementation of FIAF cultural programs for kids
    • Collaborate with FIAF sponsors (kids programs)
    • Nurture partnerships with youth literature and FLE publishers

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Native French-speaker or equivalent proficiency
  • Master 1 or 2 minimum in the field of teaching French as a foreign language or DAEFLE (diplôme d’aptitude à l’enseignement du français langue étrangère)
  • An official teaching diploma (diplôme de professeur des écoles or equivalent) a plus
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in teaching French as a foreign language to a young audience
  • Have good knowledge and understanding of the CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for the teaching of Foreign Languages)
  • Must be knowledgeable on pedagogy as it relates to French language instruction for children 5 to 17 years old
  • Must be knowledgeable with technologies applied to the teaching of foreign languages
  • Must be knowledgeable with Smart Board technology
  • Must demonstrate a strong capacity to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to adapt to multiple and shifting priorities, be meticulous, thorough and detail- oriented, and be able to meet deadlines and manage time effectively

Event Producer

Department: Programming
Reports to: Artistic Director
Designation: Exempt full-time

Position Summary: The Event Producer will be responsible for producing FIAF’s cultural programs; FIAF’s annual festivals (Crossing the Line and TILT Kids Festival), FIAF’s theater season, the Art de Vivre series as well as the gallery exhibitions. This is not a curatorial position.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Prepare contracts for all the productions of the season as well as partnership agreements with outside partners.
  • Prepare budgets for the programs, and direct the maintenance of records of expenditures, and receipts related to the events.
  • Logistics: Coordinate Flight, hotels, local transportations for artistic teams
  • Hospitality: prepare all aspects of the artists needs for their stay in NY and for their performances at FIAF (green room hospitality Etc…)
  • Visa: with FIAF’s lawyers, coordinate visa processing for artists
  • Technical support: Coordinate with Technical Director production needs, serve as a liaison between artists and FIAF’s technical director
  • Coordinate the administrative life of the programming department including financial reports and requests.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Arts Degree with 5 years experience and/or focus in arts administration.
  • Administrative work experience in a diverse performing arts environments .
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office: Excel, Word.
  • Understanding of performing arts, including a thorough understanding of what it takes to put it all together (including budgets, fundraising, touring, etc.).
  • Interest in working with artists and companies.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of FIAF mission and programming.
  • Bilingual French English is a must.

Teaching Artists

More Info

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) invites dynamic, experienced, and creative Teaching Artists to apply to our 2015-2016 In-School Arts Education Program. Teaching Artists in all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The Program
FIAF matches Teaching Artists with public middle schools in under-served New York City neighborhoods to lead weekly, sequential arts workshops during regular school hours with classes of 15-25 students (1-3 per school). These workshops introduce students to Francophone cultures and a specific artistic discipline while empowering and inspiring students through the hands-on process of creating their own final projects.

At the end of each workshop, students’ final art projects are displayed in FIAF’s Gallery.

During the 2015-2016 school year, these workshops will span approximately 24 weeks between September 2015 and April 2016. Each class will participate for the full 24-week sequence.

Criteria

  • Native French speaker with excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Excellent teaching ability, including experience with classroom teaching and curriculum development. Prior experience with adolescents and NYC public schools a plus.
  • Artistic excellence, including quality and scope of artistic work and depth of knowledge within an artistic discipline.
  • Collaborative attitude and willingness to adapt to diverse student populations.
